Fluorobiotech was proud to attend the recent Connect Cities: London x Cape Town Tech Summit, hosted by Grow London Global and London & Partners, which brought together innovators, entrepreneurs, and government leaders from two of the world’s leading tech hubs.
The summit served as a platform for deepening collaboration between the United Kingdom and South Africa, with a strong focus on innovation, international trade, and cross-border investment. Distinguished speakers included Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, Howard Dawber OBE, and Mayor of Cape Town Geordin Hill-Lewis, who each shared forward-thinking insights on how cities can work together to drive inclusive growth through technology.

In addition to engaging with global thought leaders and partners, Fluorobiotech was especially pleased to offer this opportunity to its South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) interns, who attended as part of their experiential learning. Atiya Pillay, Cameron Dickson, Mzuzu Mthiyane, and Tshepo Matlou were immersed in conversations on global tech ecosystems, gaining invaluable exposure to the intersections of policy, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
“Our interns are the next generation of biotech leaders,” noted Dr Vermeulen. “It was inspiring to see them engage directly with the international community and begin building networks that could shape their future careers.”
The Connect Cities event underscored the potential of strategic city partnerships to create opportunities for startups, researchers, and talent in both regions and highlighted Cape Town’s growing role as a gateway to African innovation.
